Marina Zirdziņa International Vocal Competition (MZIVC) is created to highlight the cultural heritage of Latvian musical theatre, to highlight the diversity of operetta and musical theatre genres and to inspire young singers to develop their talent, artistic and vocal skills. It will celebrate the brilliant personality of the operetta diva Marina Zirdziņa, bringing to life her characteristic artistic and professional qualities. The competition will be held for the first time and young vocalists from all over the world are invited to participate.
MZIVC will be held in two rounds and will be judged by an international jury. To take part in the competition, the participant must send a video recording and to complete and submit an application by May 31, 2025. Round 1 will be held entirely on-line. In the Round 2 on August 12, 2025 the competitors will perform in person with Symphony Orchestra of the Operetta Theatre (Latvia) conducted by Gregory Buchalter (The Metropolitan Opera, USA) in the Great Hall of the Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music .
AIM OF THE COMPETITION:
- to present the diversity of quality operetta and musical theatre genres and to identify and highlight talented young vocal performing artists in musical theatre disciplines internationally in the Baltics and worldwide;
- to promote the professional interest of young performing artists in the operetta genre;
- to motivate the development of vocal talent in all professional disciplines of the operetta genre;
- to support and promote young performers in the operetta and musical theatre genre;
- to enrich and diversify the Latvia the culture landscape with excellence in operetta and musical theatre;
- to promote the individual professional development of young performing artists;
- to foster Latvia's inclusion in the international musical theatre art scene.
PERFORMACE GENRES: classical operetta, all musical theatre genres, musical, opera.
ROUND 1 will be held entirely on-line:
To enter the competition, the participant must submit an application by May 31, 2025 at 23:59 :
1. Completed application form;
2. Hyperlink Youtube.com to a video recording of not more than 10 minutes total duration. The video recording may be made with any type of camera (including a camera built into a phone), but must be in one piece, unedited and of professional quality, clear and understandable both visually and audibly. The video title must include the participant's name, age (optional), the country represented, the name of the composer, the exact full title of the piece in the original language and the name of the accompanist. The quality of the video is the responsibility of the submitter;
3. A photo for publicity (by submitting this photo, the contestant agrees to its publication);
4. Creative biography (CV) for publicity;
5. Copy of passport;
6. Sheet music of the selected program;
7. Bank payment order for the entry fee. The payment order must contain the following information: Marina Zirdzina International Vocal Competition 2025 entry fee.
The entry fee per person is € 110
The entry fee for one person with a disability is € 90, with proof of disability.
The entry fee for multiple categories is € 110 multiplied by number of categories minus 5%.

The results of the 1st Round will be announced on June 12, 2025 on the competition website. Contestants selected for the 2nd Round will be sent information about the 2nd Round, a rehearsal schedule with the orchestra and the sheet music for the final song, When you walk through a storm from Rodger and Hammerstein musical Carousel, which will be sung together at the Winners' Concert on August 12.
ROUND 2 will take place on August 12, 2025 at the Great Hall of Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music, Kr. Barona iela 1, Riga, LV1050 and will be open to the public. The accompaniment will be performed by the Symphony Orchestra of the Operetta Theatre conducted by Gregory Buchalter (USA).
The official announcement of the results, the Winners' Gala Concert and the Awards Ceremony will take place on August 12, 2025 at 7 pm in the Great Hall of Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music, open to the public. The jury will determine the participants and the programme of the concert.
